WESTERTERP-PLANTENGA, MARGRIET S.,MANUELA P.G.M. LEJEUNE, AND EVA M. R. KOVACS. Obes Res. 2005;13:1195–1204.

Abstract: Investigation of the effect of a green tea-caffeine mixture on weight maintenance after body weight loss in moderately obese subjects in relation to habitual caffeine intake.Research Methods and Procedures: A randomized placebo- controlled double blind parallel trial in 76 overweight and moderately obese subjects, (BMI, 27.5 _ 2.7 kg/m2) matched for sex, age, BMI, height, body mass, and habitual caffeine intake was conducted. A very low energy diet intervention during 4 weeks was followed by 3 months of weight maintenance (WM); during the WM period, the subjects received a green tea-caffeine mixture (270 mg epigallocatechin gallate _ 150 mg caffeine per day) or placebo. Results: Subjects lost 5.9 _1.8 (SD) kg (7.0 _ 2.1%) of body weight (p _ 0.001). At baseline, satiety was positively, and in women, leptin was inversely, related to subjects’ habitual caffeine consumption (p _ 0.01). High caffeine consumers reduced weight, fat mass, and waist circumference more than low caffeine consumers; resting energy expenditure was reduced less and respiratory quotient was reduced more during weight loss (p _ 0.01). In the low caffeine consumers, during WM, green tea still reduced body weight, waist, respiratory quotient and body fat, whereas resting energy expenditure was increased compared with a restoration of these variables with placebo (p _0.01). In the high caffeine consumers, no effects of the green tea-caffeine mixture were observed during WM. Discussion: High caffeine intake was associated with weight loss through thermogenesis and fat oxidation and with suppressed leptin in women. In habitual low caffeine consumers, the green tea-caffeine mixture improved WM, partly through thermogenesis and fat oxidation.

“Regular consumption of green tea provides a thermogenic affect for weight loss and weight maintenance. A highlight from this study is the evidence of the use of EGCG as a thermogenic aid. A thermogenic aid is something that wastes energy in the form of heat, instead of producing energy for the body. The key to long term success with body weight is having a plan to maintain the progress we make through diet and exercise!” - Josh Smith

Description: This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of green tea on weight reduction in obese Thais.;A randomized, controlled trial involving 60 obese subjects (body mass index, BMI > 25kg/m(2)) was conducted. All subjects consumed a Thai diet containing 3 meals (8373.6kJ/day) for 12weeks, prepared by the Nutritional Unit at Srinagarind Hospital. The diet contained 65% carbohydrates, 15% protein, and 20% fat. Body weight, BMI, body composition, resting energy expenditure, and substrate oxidation were measured at baseline, and during weeks 4, 8, and 12 of the study. Serum levels of leptin and urine VMA were measured at baseline and during the 12th week. Differences over time and between the treatments (green tea or placebo) over time were determined using two-factor ANOVA with repeated measures.;In comparing the two groups, differences in weight loss were 2.70, 5.10, and 3.3kg during the 4th, 8th, and 12th weeks of the study, respectively. At the 8th and 12th weeks of the study, body weight loss was significantly different (P < 0.05). At the 8th week, the difference in resting energy expenditure was 183.38kJ/day (P < 0.001), the difference in the respiratory quotient was 0.02 (P < 0.05), and no significant differences existed in satiety score, food intake, or physical activity. Urine VMA was significantly different in the 12th week of the study (P < 0.05).;We conclude that green tea can reduce body weight in obese Thai subjects by increasing energy expenditure and fat oxidation.

“The findings of this study among obese Thai subjects found that daily consumption of green tea extract increased the amount of calories burned at rest. Another interesting finding in this particular study is the amount of weight loss for those who consumed green tea extract for 12 weeks. The weight loss was 7.35 pounds greater than those who didn’t use green tea extract.” – Josh Smith

In this study, we investigated the effects of the major green tea polyphenol, (−)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), on high-fat–induced obesity, symptoms of the metabolic syndrome, and fatty liver in mice. In mice fed a high-fat diet (60% energy as fat), supplementation with dietary EGCG treatment (3.2 g/kg diet) for 16 wk reduced body weight (BW) gain, percent body fat, and visceral fat weight (P < 0.05) compared with mice without EGCG treatment. The BW decrease was associated with increased fecal lipids in the high-fat–fed groups (r2 = 0.521; P < 0.05). EGCG treatment attenuated insulin resistance, plasma cholesterol, and monocyte chemoattractant protein concentrations in high-fat–fed mice (P < 0.05). EGCG treatment also decreased liver weight, liver triglycerides, and plasma alanine aminotransferase concentrations in high-fat–fed mice (P < 0.05). Histological analyses of liver samples revealed decreased lipid accumulation in hepatocytes in mice treated with EGCG compared with high-fat diet-fed mice without EGCG treatment. In another experiment, 3-mo-old high-fat–induced obese mice receiving short-term EGCG treatment (3.2 g/kg diet, 4 wk) had decreased mesenteric fat weight and blood glucose compared with high-fat–fed control mice (P < 0.05). Our results indicate that long-term EGCG treatment attenuated the development of obesity, symptoms associated with the metabolic syndrome, and fatty liver. Short-term EGCG treatment appeared to reverse preexisting high-fat–induced metabolic pathologies in obese mice. These effects may be mediated by decreased lipid absorption, decreased inflammation, and other mechanisms.

Many “functional” foods and ingredients are advocated for their effects on body composition but few have consistent scientific support for their efficacy. However, an increasing amount of mechanistic and clinical evidence is building for green tea (GT). This experiment was therefore undertaken to study the effects of a high-catechin GT on body composition in a moderately overweight Chinese population. In a randomized placebo-controlled trial, 182 moderately overweight Chinese subjects, consumed either two servings of a control drink (C; 30 mg catechins, 10 mg caffeine/day), one serving of the control drink and one serving of an extra high-catechin GT1 (458 mg catechins, 104 mg caffeine/day), two servings of a high-catechin GT2 (468 mg catechins, 126 mg caffeine/day) or two servings of the extra high-catechin GT3 (886 mg catechins, 198 mg caffeine/day) for 90 days. Data were collected at 0, 30, 60, and 90 days. We observed a decrease in estimated intra-abdominal fat (IAF) area of 5.6 cm2 in the GT3 group. In addition, we found decreases of 1.9 cm in waist circumference and 1.2 kg body weight in the GT3 group vs. C (P < 0.05). We also observed reductions in total body fat (GT2, 0.7 kg, P < 0.05) and body fat % (GT1, 0.6%, P < 0.05). We conclude that consumption of two servings of an extra high-catechin GT leads to improvements in body composition and reduces abdominal fatness in moderately overweight Chinese subjects.

Objective To assess the efficacy and safety of a green tea meal replacement formula product for the treatment of obesity. Design A 12-week clinical trial was performed, in which 120 (25 male, 95 female) healthy, overweight and obese persons were included (each of them occupy one-third of the whole population). The green tea formula was provided in the treatment group and normal diet was provided as control. Results More weight loss was found in the treatment group than the control (6.8 versus 2.3 kg; P <0.001). Also, the treatment group had a greater changes in total cholesterol (185.2 versus 215.2 mg/dl; P=0.011) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (106.7 versus 127.6 mg/dl; P<0.005). Among completers only, the treatment group again lost more weight (6.8 kg; n=54 versus 0.8 kg; n=56; P =0.001) and had a greater reduced total body fat mass (7.6%; n=37 versus 0.5%; P=0.005). Conclusions This green tea meal replacement formula contributes to the lower body weight and reduced low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level.

The secret of green tea lies in the fact it is rich in catechin polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG is a powerful antioxidant: besides inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, it kills cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. It has also been effective in lowering LDL cholesterol levels, and inhibiting the abnormal formation of blood clots. The latter takes on added importance when you consider that thrombosis (the formation of abnormal blood clots) is the leading cause of heart attacks and stroke.

The benefits of drinking green tea in our body are so remarkable that it is believed that the key to a longer life may be brewing in your cup!

Catechin suppresses the formation of plaque by cariogenic bacteria and also kills the bacteria themselves. It also kills other bacteria that cause bad breath. Green tea contains natural fluorine which helps prevent cavities.

Consuming agents that are effective antioxidants will slow the aging process. Green tea is rich in vitamin E, which works as antioxidant. Also, catechin in green tea is a very strong antioxidant.

High Blood Pressure: Tea lovers may be surprised to learn their beverage of choice touts yet another health benefit: blood pressure control. Drinking a half-cup of green or oolong tea per day reduced a person’s risk of high blood pressure by almost 50% in a new study. People who drank at least two and a half cups per day reduced their risk even more. Their risk was reduced even if they had risk factors for high blood pressure, such as high sodium intake.

There are four primary polyphenols in green tea and they are often collectively referred to as catechins. Powerful antioxidants, catechins have been shown in recent studies to fight viruses, slow aging, and have a beneficial effect on health. Clinical tests have shown that catechins destroy free radicals and have far-reaching positive effects on the entire body.

Green tea also contains high concentrations of catechin polyphenols particularly the said epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). These compounds work with other chemicals in the body to increase the levels of oxidation of fat and it raises one’s metabolic rate. As a result, the body burns fuels as fat and this will help in your weight loss program. Drink just a couple of cups of green tea a day and this will help to boost your immune system. Not only will it give you that energy boost but it will also give you more endurance to work out longer as part of your exercise program.

One of the best benefits of drinking green tea is its ability to fight bacteria. This gives your immune system a boost. It also helps kill bacteria that cause plaque and subsequent tooth decay. Green tea can help fight food poisoning, as well.

Many people have lost weight by using the Green Tea weight loss plan. Green tea is up among the most used natural herbs for weight loss on the market. Research has confirmed that green tea has many health benefits so losing weight is only one of the many benefits.

Green tea contains polyphenols (plant chemicals), which is antioxidants which guard our bodies against premature cell aging and can contribute to age related conditions. It also contains trace amounts of vitamin B complex, vitamin C, Vitamin E, and natural fluoride as well as other minerals.

Green tea promotes the body’s ability to burn fat fast. Green tea also helps stop food cravings and the result is that you shed the pounds safely, naturally, and without side effects. Green tea burns fat and gives you energy too. It increases metabolism so you burn more calories and fat, helps maintain cholesterol levels, helps increase the levels of acidophilus (friendly bacteria) in the intestines. It is suggested that you use the green tea in conjunction with a reduced calorie intake and exercise. Green tea diet products come in bags, capsules, liquid, tablets, and loose tea forms. Green tea is up to 200% more powerful than vitamin E as far as an antioxidant.

Green tea is one of the favorite natural weight loss products on the market. Natural weight loss products are made from all natural herbs or plants and do not have any side effects. There are no drugs or stimulants in them and they are made from all organic herbs and plants. That means there are no chemicals such as pesticides or herbicides on them so they are in their natural state when processed. The capsules that these ingredients are put in are also made from vegetable based materials.

Other popular natural diet supplements are Hoodia Gordonii, herbal Phentermine, Oat extract, citrin, apple cider vinegar, bitter orange, grapefruit pectin, chitosan, glucomannan (konjac plant), and more. The natural weight loss products are much cheaper than the over the counter and prescription diet drugs. They are also much safer to use. Many of the weight loss drugs have possible side effects and many of them can be severe. It makes common sense that a low calorie diet and exercise is also helpful in any diet. You will lose more weight much quicker if you add them to your diet regime. You can still lose weight without exercise and diet with some of these products because you will eat less and lose weight because the products suppress the appetite. If you watch your sugar and fat intake, you can lose even more.
